Chapter Fourteen: MAKING PLANS

Kissing your fiancée, Sara had told John, was quite acceptable, still, John doubted that applied to the kind of kissing they were currently indulging in, for starters they were in the library – John was leaning against the desk, and Sara was standing between his legs, her slender arms wrapped around him and his hands resting on her lower (lower) back – he had his tongue down he throat and her breasts were pushed against his chest.

That’s the way they liked to kiss, and it usually lead to things getting out of hand but they were so happy about the news that he didn’t mind so much.

John had managed to obtain a special license thanks to the fact that he knew the Archbishop of Canterbury’s youngest brother – they were friends from school – which they needed so Hugh could perform the ceremony instead of old Vicar Jones. Now they could be married as soon as Hugh said he and Mary could come to Silverhill. Sara had been planning the other particulars of the wedding, she was going to go to Derby to buy the fabric for her wedding dress and have the local seamstress make it for her, and they were to have a small wedding breakfast at Cherrywood Cottage.

So, what had started as a celebratory kiss had developed into something of a make out, and they were in a public place and they should really be more mindful of the properties until they were wed, but they had never been able to help themselves around each other.

They were so engaged in each other that neither Sara nor John noticed that someone was approaching down the hallway towards the library, they didn’t notice, in fact until said person knocked on the doorframe and cleared his throat.

“Uncle!” Sara cried as she and John jumped a part like a pair of guilty teenagers.

“Good afternoon, Sara.” Lord Stapleton said. “John, you’re here, that’s good.”

“Pardon?”

“I need to talk about Kate’s papers; I’m going to need them.”

“Whatever for?” John said, getting defensive.

“I intend to take her to the Continent.”

“WHAT?!”

“After our wedding, I asked Kate to marry me earlier this day and she made me the honor to accept my suit. We already spoke to Vicar Jones and the banns will start to be read this same afternoon. We are waiting the full month these things take; people are going to talk as it is, so we are doing everything properly to minimize the talk. Afterwards I’m taking Kate to travel for a while, I think she’ll like it and it will shield her from the worst of the gossip that is sure to follow.”

“I’m not sure I want to let you marry my sister after what you put her through, my lord.” John said.

“I’ll make Kate happy, I swear it. I almost lost her once –though it was my own fault - and I’m not going to let her get away from me.”

“I need to talk to Kate, but if she wants to, I’ll allow it. But be sure, my lord. She was -”

“I know about Lord Westman, and I’ll swear it won’t happen again.”

“Like I said, I’ll talk to her.” John said.

“I suppose I deserve that.”

“Did you really ask her to marry you, Uncle?” Sara asked eagerly.

“Yes,” Lord Stapleton said. “And I would like for the two of you to go to London for a couple of weeks, to buy whatever you need and for property sake.”

“I don’t like London.” Sara said. “And I don’t want to be apart from John.”

“It will only be a few days, it’s important that people know that the family accept Kate.” Lord Stapleton said. “It’s going to be a complicated game, but I don’t want her to suffer, even if we choose to stay here at Silverhill for ever more, it won’t be because she isn’t accepted in society.”

“I suppose that if it is for Kate’s sake I’ll do it.” Sara said sulkily.

“Thank you Sara,” Lord Stapleton said. “I’ll leave you alone now; go on with what you were doing. It’s not like I can say anything about it.” He added, and left as swiftly as he had arrived.

“Well, that was nice of him,” Sara said.

“Asking Kate to marry him? No, he was LUCKY my sister accepted him.”

“Well, of course. But that’s true for all men, we women aim high and then settle,” Sara said mischievously. “Lucky for me that I’m settling for the best man I know. But I didn’t mean that, I meant the door.” Sara pointed at the now closed door.

“I see…” John said looking at the closed door and then at her. “Tell me, are you going to take advantage of me?”

“Of course!”

“I was hopping you would say that,” John said with a big smile and they proceeded to get comfortable once again.

.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.

Three days later, Kate was feeling everything but comfortable. When Robert had mentioned that she would go to London to buy her wedding dress and other wedding-related clothes, Kate had refused, but Robert had convinced Sara to go and buy her dress in London too, and now Kate couldn’t get herself out of it when even Sara – who loathed all things London – was excited about the trip.

It’s not that she didn’t want to go to London, she had never been there and, unlike Sara, didn’t have cause to believe she wouldn’t like it, but she knew that as soon as they arrived, both herself and Sara would be subjected to all kind of scrutiny and gossip: Sara had ran back to Silverhill right at the beginning of her London Season and had said in public that she just didn’t have the stomach for the sneaky-awfulness of her fellow debutantes and their match-making mamas, which was something everybody with an ounce of decency, not to mention intelligence, thought, but no one said.

And Kate, well, she had been jilted by a lord once and was once again engaged to someone that in society eyes was far her superior, and being that Robert was – though Kate didn’t think he looked it – twenty years her senior and had a title, lots of money and a productive state would all add up for people to say that Kate was nothing more than a young, beautiful gold-digger/social climber. Kate knew it, they had said it before.

So, all in all, she wasn’t looking forward to going, much less in such short notice, she had only been engaged for three days! But Robert had come two days ago and had presented her with her engagement ring – which was a beautiful gold band set with a pear-but perfect white diamond – and then told her that she and Sara would be leaving for London in two days time. They would use his carriage, of course, and go stay at his town house in Mayfair, and that he already had sent instructions to his housekeeper there telling her that Kate should be treated like the Lady of the House.

“I don’t want to go,” Kate said with a small pout, she knew she was being childish, but the more childish she got the more patient Robert became with her.

“It’s only for a few days, my love.” Robert said, taking both her hands and bringing them to his lips. “You’ll be fine. Sara and you will do some shopping and then come back her next week.” He added reassuringly.

“I still don’t see the necessity for us to go all the way to London.”

Robert could think of a number of reasons but they were just likely to cause Kate to start arguing each and every one of them, and they needed to get going if there wanted to make a good progress. So, instead of arguing with her, Robert simple pulled Kate into his arms and rubbed her back soothingly as he said “Just humor me,”

“You just take advantage of me because I love you so,” Kate said, trying to sound resentful but the effect was ruined by the contented sigh that follower her words, as she relaxed and sank into the warmth of Robert’s body.

As he held Kate, Robert turned a little to make sure that John and Sara were busy with their own goodbyes, and then pulled back slightly; tilted Kate’s chin up and kissed her. Soon, Kate was practically dangling from his neck and he was considering if they could make it to his room without Sara and John noticing… and then reluctantly discarded the idea: he had promised to himself, and to Kate, that the next time they made love it would be as husband and wife.

Some three feet away, Sara and John were saying their own goodbyes. “Will you miss me?” Sara asked.

“Every moment of the day, I swear.”

“And you won’t go anywhere near Miss Yarrow…”

“Of course not, Sara, I’ve never even liked the woman.”

“Then why you pretended you did?”

“Because you’re so cute when you’re jealous.”

Sara scowled and John smiled and kissed her softly. “I love you Sara, nothing is going to change that, ever.”

“Oh, please, just get going already!” Fred said from behind their backs, he was sitting on the front steps of the house, he had gone to say goodbye to Sara and everything – he had been at his best behavior for the last few days – but then both couples had begun to get cozy with each other and he had been sitting there, waiting for the couples to break apart for at least fifteen minutes.

“You are so unromantic, Fred.” Sara said primly, “Alright, Kate, let’s go.” She said.

Robert and Kate broke apart and Kate’s hat was a little askew, so Robert righted it and tied the ribbons under her chin. “Be safe, love.” He said and helped her into the carriage where Sara was waiting.

Both Sara and Kate looked out of the window and waved until they took a turn on the run and neither the house nor the men they loved were visible.

“We are complete saps, Kate.” Sara said with a sigh as she settled in the bench opposite to Kate.

“We are,” Kate answered. It was funny but she missed Robert already, and she knew Sara felt the same regarding John.

.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.

Two days later, they arrived to Stapleton House, Lord Stapleton’s London residence. It was midmorning and both Sara and Kate were weary from the long travel. So they went straight to their rooms and slept clear until the next morning

So, three days later, Kate woke up in a luxurious but distinctively masculine room decorated in dark blue and slivery-grey and with a lot of heavy furniture made in dark wood. Kate had to smile, she was in Robert’s room – per his request – and in an attempt to hide the room’s masculinity, Robert had had the room filled with pale pink and white roses. Vases full of them were covering every available space. She was touched at his thoughtfulness, and somehow, being in his room, surrounded by his things and sleeping in his bed, made Kate feel a little better though she still missed him terribly.

“KATE!” Sara said, barging in still dressed in her night shirt, or so Kate thought but as Sara came closer, Kate noticed that it was actually one of John’s shirts and that she was using it as a nightdress. “Kate, wake up!”

“I’m awake.” Kate said, sitting up as Sara sat down next to her.

“We have so much to do,” Sara said cheerfully.

Kate sat up, knowing full and well that the following ten days were likely to be some of the longest of her life, but then she looked at her roses, and had to smile.

WRITTEN IN THE RAIN

Chapter 15: FRIENDS, OLD AND NEW

Meeting Lord Pallister had been a complete surprise as one usually didn’t found Lords of the Realm at the modiste, but Lord Pallister seemed to be escorting his young sister and when Miss Victoria Pallister –who was a very chatty and very charming young lady – found out that Kate was John’s sister and that Kate was the woman John always talked about, she had gone and gushed it all out to her brother Simon, Lord Pallister; who happened to be another one of John’s closest friends from Eton.

John, Sara was learning, had a rather impressive amount of friends.

“I knew you looked familiar.” Simon, for he always went by Simon among his friends, said to Sara after greeting both her and Kate with unguarded enthusiasm. “If I recall correctly, John had a miniature of you. He did nothing but stare at it during our last year at Eton.”

“He did?” Sara said and she felt herself flushing with pleasure.

“Absolutely- He did nothing but talk about you.” Simon informed her. “It was specially bad after the holidays. And, to all of this, is he in town?”

“No, sadly, he had to stay at Silverhill. Kate and I are just here because we came to get some things for our weddings.” Sara said. “John and I are getting marrying in two weeks, and Kate is marrying my uncle a mere week after.”

“Oh, that’s too bad; I was looking forward to seeing him.” Simon said, looking truly disgruntled.

“My brother thinks the world of yours Miss Kate.” Victoria informed them.

“Of course I do, when Mama and Papa died and left us up to our ears in debt, John helped me to manage our investments, make new ones and play the market. Without his help and advice I would have had to marry a horse-face, ill tempered heiress to save the family,” Simon shuddered visibly. “John is a dammed genius when it comes to finances and figures; got himself –and me – a nice, tidy fortune.”

Sara smiled, John never ever talked about his finances, but she was sure that he had taken his share out of selling his parents house and land, and invested it well.

“Anyway, how long are you in town?”

“For at least five more days,” Sara said clearing resenting every second she spent away from John.

“You have to come to my ball then!” Vicky said with all the enthusiasm of a young girl in her first season. “I’m having my coming out ball in two days.”

Sara and Kate exchanged a look, ever since the announcement had been made in the papers that Lord Stapleton was marrying Ms Katherine Parker, and that she and Lady Sara Douglas – Lord Stapleton’s niece – were in town, Sra and Kate had been showered with invitations. Morbid curiosity, both Kate and Sara thought, so they had rejected them all. But these people seemed to genuinely like them and John, so they nodded in agreement.

“We’ll be delighted.” Kate said.

“Wonderful!” Vicky said. “I’ll have someone deliver the invitation to you this very afternoon. And you have to come to Gunther’s for ice cream with me and my friends tomorrow!” She added. “We are being chaperoned by my aunt, who’s, like, a hundred years old and blind as a bat!” She said happily, being his chatterbox-little self.

Kate and Sara smiled, they had never had any other friends but each other, and Vicky seemed like a nice acquisition.

.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.

It was rather fortunate, John thought, that he and Lord Stapleton (who had taken interest when John mentioned ‘going to London’) had cause to go to London on business and they would be able to see Sara – and Kate – and escort them back home. Never mind that he could have conducted his business by mail as usual. He – as well as Lord Stapleton – had business interests all over England, but he rarely went beyond Derby, occasionally Sheffield and once or twice a year to London-

So yes, maybe they had completely fabricated the reason to follow their fiancées to London, but at least they had held out for four days before leaving, which was remarkable when one considerate how much of a saps they were when it came to their brides-to-be.

“You two make me sick.” Fred said looking at both of them as they checked in the Rutledge Hotel. Since he had been bored he had decided to tag along with them to London.

“Wait, Fred, just wait.” Lord Stapleton said fondly and with a big smile.

Fred murmured something like “Sad” and “pathetic.”

“And why are we staying at a Hotel anyway? Why can’t we go home?”

“Because Sara and Kate are there and we are all bachelors and there is not one single chaperon in sight. That’s why.” Lord Stapleton answered.

“And we want to give them a surprise.” John added.

“Whatever, I’m going to my room to rest.” Freddie said and took himself off.

Lord Stapleton sent someone over to Stapleton House for information about Kate and Sara’s whereabouts. They were informed that the ladies were getting ready to go to a ball at Lord Pallister’s house. And since John was very good friends with Lord Pallister, he immediately wrote to his friend and explained the situation and less than four hours after their arrival at London Fred, John and Robert found themselves on the way to Lord Pallister’s house in Mayfair.

.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.

Both Sara and Kate had been claimed by Vicky the second they had arrived at Lord Pallister’s ballroom and had been included at Vicky’s group of friends whom they had met the day before. Kate was enjoying herself immensely, so far no one had made snide remarks about her upcoming marriage to Robert and that made her happy. Besides, both hers and Sara’s fittings had gone remarkably well, and they would have to stay in the city for just a couple of days more before going back home.

When the dancing began, both Sara and Kate pleaded a touch of fatigue and went to sit by the refreshments table. That’s when they were approached by a young woman their age with a lot of raven-black hair and warm blue eyes. The woman was somewhat plain, her features even and well proportioned but unremarkable, her skin was too pale as if she rarely saw the outdoors and she seemed frail of body and health, but as she approached them a full smile lifted her pale-rose lips.

“I heard you were John Parker’s sister,” She said in a soft voice in Kate’s direction. “And his fiancée.” She added to Sara.

“That’s right.”

“I wanted to meet you two; my husband thinks the world of your brother, Miss Parker.”

“Please, call me Kate.”

“Kate,” the woman said. “They went together to Eton. And all Stephen talks about is John this and John that.”

“You’re Lord Westman’s wife.” Sara said with a gasp.

“Yes, how…?” Lady Westman started but then paused, and understanding crossed her face. “I see. You’re she, are you not? The woman he loves. Is you.”

“My lady, I…”

“Charlotte, that’s my name.” She said, “May I sit down?” Kate nodded and she sat down. Kate threw Sara an imploring look.

“I’ll got get you some lemonade, Charlotte,” Sara said quickly and left.

“I knew you existed. He talks about you in his sleep, you know? When he’s angry he likes to remind me how beautiful you are, how much I am not.”

“I’m very sorry, I swear, but I assure you I don’t encourage your husband, I don’t think I have crossed a friendly word with him since he…”

“Since he went to tell his father that he was going to marry you and ended up marrying me instead?” Charlotte said. “Yes, I know. I suppose one could say I brought this on my own. We were childhood friends, you know? Everyone expected us to marry; I think he had resigned himself to it, until he met you. I, I’ve loved him all my life. And when I thought I would lose him I made my father force the match, I thought that my love would be enough. I know now that it isn’t. And I’m sorry for the pain I caused him and you.”

“There is no pain, not on my side.” Kate told her.

“Thank you for saying that. Maybe one day even he will forgive me.” She said softly.

“He will, one day he’ll realize how much you’re worth, you’ll see.”

“I hope you’re right.” Charlotte said and Kate felt her heart break when she saw the tears in the other woman’s eyes. Quickly, Kate helped Charlotte to her feet and escorted her to the nearest lady’s room and helped her put herself at rights.

“Thank you, you’re too kind.” Charlotte said, once she had dried her tears.

“I’ll leave you alone now, if you want.” Kate said.

“Yes, please, I could use a few minutes alone.” Charlotte said.

Kate left the lady’s room with a bit of a heavy heart; Charlotte didn’t deserve to suffer so much because of Stephen. She really didn’t.

“I hoped you would be here.”

“Stephen, I would advice you to call for your carriage and take your wife back home, she seems a bit indisposed.”

“She always is. Has been sick all of her life.” Stephen said uncaring. “My only hope is that she’ll die soon and I’ll have my freedom back.”

Kate curled her hands into fists, using all of her self-restraint not to slap the hell out of Stephen and cause a scene that surely would hurt Charlotte more than anyone else. “Be kind to her, Stephen. She loves you, for some reason beyond my comprehension, especially now that I see you for what you are.”

“I heard you’re going to marry that old man,” Stephen went on as if Kate hadn’t spoken.

“I don’t have to give you explanations of any kind,” Kate said “And further more-” She broke up in mid sentence when she caught a glimpse of a familiar face. “Robert,” she murmured and left Stephen without a second glance, striding towards Robert who had also seen her and was making his way towards her.

“Kate!” He said happy.

“Robert! What are you doing here?” Kate said delighted and –though it wasn’t quite proper – hugged Robert.

“We missed you too much, and we made up and excuse and came here. We wanted to surprise you.”

“Oh, Robert, I missed you too, so much!” She said.

“Well, we are now here together. May I have this dance?” He asked when a new waltz began.

“Of course.” Kate said and let him pull her into the dance floor.

And so, the first glimpse that London Society ever got of Lady Stapleton and his intended bride was of a couple completely besotted and in love.

.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.

Meanwhile, at another side of the same ballroom...

Sara was roaming about, remembering exactly why she hated balls so much, Kate was busy taking care of Lord Westman’s wife and Sara believed that conversation was to be kept private. So she was walking around the ballroom, smiling at the people she knew and ignoring those she didn’t.

Finally, she went to stand by the wall and sighed to herself.

“I never pegged you for a wallflower, darling.” A familiar voice said and when she looked to her right, she saw that John was leaning against to wall in an exactly identical position as she.

“John!” She cried happily and threw herself at him earning herself some looks from the people around.

Sara didn’t care, she hugged John and remained snuggle din the crook of his arm, feeling truly happy for the first time in days.

“I see you did manage to surprise her.” Simon said as he came to stand with them.

“You knew?” Sara asked.

“Well, I did got a letter from him this afternoon begging for an invite to the ball…” Simon said.

“I hardly begged.” John said lightly.

“That’s not how I recall it.”

“Simon!”

“Alright, alright. I just wanted to say hello. I see that you’re too busy staring at your betrothed to mind your old friends.”

“I just have never been able to find something more lovely to look at.” John said, stroking Sara’s hair.

“Good answer,” Sara said approvingly.

“Has you wrapped around her finger, doesn’t she?” Simon said.

“Yes and she knows it.”

“And that’s why this marriage is going to work.” Sara said.

“Why? Because I do everything you say?” John asked amused.

“No. Because you love me enough to do everything I say.” Sara said smugly.

“No fooling this one.” John said, hugging her some more.

.-.-.-.-.-.-.

And because Fred was there too…

Fred was sitting by himself near the staircase staring at the room at large. His father and Kate had already exceeded the proper three dances that a couple could dance, they were around their fifth dance together and didn’t seem like they were going to stop any time soon. And Sara and John and conveniently got lost in the gardens and weren’t likely to resurface in a good couple of hours.

So Fred was all by his lonesome self.

Until he became aware that there was someone looking at him.

“Yes?” He asked to the girl –dressed all in white – who was leaning over the banister of the stairs and was looking at him with questioning eyes.

“Are you Fred?” She asked.

“And you are?”

“You didn’t answer my question.”

“If I do will you go away?”

“Maybe.”

“Yes.”

“Is that short for Alfred?”

“Frederick.”

“Oh, I like it.”

There was a pause.

“Are you leaving now?”

“No.” The girl said. “Dance with me.”

“I don’t feel like it.”

“Maybe you just can’t dance.”

“I can too!”

“No need to be ashamed.” The girl said with a supercilious expression that somehow fit her small face.

“Alright, if I dance with you will you shut up?”

“Mmm… I’ll consider it.” The girl said absently twirled her auburn hair around her finger.

“I guess that’s better than nothing.” Fred said and offered the girl his hand.

She just smiled. Usually, what Victoria Pallister wanted, she got. For now she wanted to dance with Fred, but who knew what she might want later on?

That was soooo sweet!

I loved the bit when John turned up because I could so picture him leaning against the wall and surprising Sara.

Why does he have to be so hot?

And oh la la, Fred's got a thing going with Victoria. I loved it, especially how she was really cheeky. biggrin.gif

That was amazing!

Can't wait for the next one!

Many thanks!

John is HOT, I love him.

And Fred, well, I think VIcky is just the right person to whip him about.

Yes, John and Sara are conveniently lost in the garden... how thoughtful tongue.gif

Anyways, fantabulous update! 'Twas awesome!

*sarcastically* I wonder what they were up to in the garden...

Well... pretty much what Derek and Lita (From The Wallflower) always did...

^I loved that story.

*starts reminiscing about all the Evencort stories*

I miss those, not that these stories are bad, but it was cool how they had all these characters from the same stories...

Sorry, OT.

Um, I hope the update's going good Clavie!

That update was nice and long. *nods approvingly* biggrin.gif

That was so sweet with John and Robert. icon_lol.gif

I'm happy for Fred, too. Maybe he does deserve it after all.

Fred isn't so bad deep down biggrin.gif he's actually a nice guy, a bit snobbish and fell into bad company but he isn't essencially bad.

Ah that was soooooooo sweet Clavie.

I loved it.

The bit quoted above was my all time favourite bit. (Except for all the bits including John adn Sara. |o|)

I loved the way Fred seems to have turned nice now I think he's had enough evil times to be over with now. |o|

Oh I know it's a totally off topic thing (Sorry Clavie, Tephy, Ali and all the other Mods) but: Does that not remind you off a song in Tintanic? For some reasons the fact that Fred has tunred nice reminds me of the song, My Heart Will Go On in Titnatic. |o|

Okay so just ignore me now.

Please Update Soon!

Catie, I have never seen Titanic, not complete at any rate - they forced us to watch it for English at School once - but actually kind of like the song.

And Meaghan, I see a lot of whiping in Fred's future.

Clavie
